Mitch Malloy - Phoenix Rising "The Big One" 26/9/99

It's about time American rocker Mitch Malloy graced the UK with his talent.  Seven years after his much acclaimed debut was available on import, Mitch headlined the all day Phoenix Rising show in Manchester.

Performing to copious raging female hormones down the front, the majority of the set fortunately consisted of tracks from his aforementioned debut.  Kicking in with the brilliant and raw 'Mission Of Love', Malloy has the audience on his side immediately.  Any fears that he's gone all 'white soul' were more than dispelled.

The new material slotted in perfectly - 'You Lift Me Up' and 'It's About Love' were two strong yet mellow tracks.  'Love Made A Liar Out of Me' - also a new track - is back in the rock running.  This track is actually on his recently recorded demo.  Where 'Love is No Stranger' is the only track off his second CD that he chose to play live and, it has to be said sounds a great deal better live.   'Cowboy and the Ballerina', 'Stranded in the Middle of Nowhere' and 'Over The Water' are all punchy power rock tracks featuring very tight rhythm from drummer Jim Larsen and Bass player Todd Zeller.

Mitch's vocals are outstanding throughout not least on the breathtaking 'Our Love Will Never Die' - brilliant control from the man.  The evening was rounded off with an encore of the tremendous 'Anything At All'.

After such an excellent performance, let's hope it's not another seven years before Mitch returns!
